In the field of biology, epigenetic research is particularly concerned with the activity of genes. Research into epigenetic factors such as the activity of a gene and the resulting development of cells is a central topic in epigenetics. In particular, changes in gene functions that are not due to mutation or recombination, but are still passed on to daughter cells, are for research interesting from an epigenetic point of view. DNA methylation is a central part of epigenetics and is considered an important mediator between genes and the environment. The decoding of epigenetic changes, also called epigenetic imprints, enables new perspectives and therapeutic approaches for various diseases. For example, studies have shown that persistent fear can cause epigenetic changes and that an epigenetic variant can also be involved in the development of obesity. Epigenetics also plays an important role in cancer research. (vb)
